The System of Aspects Utilised in This Short Passage Gravels Me

0

Whether it be due to age or no, time and nature have now begun to seem
to me something not quite distant. It is a certain piece of logic to a
child how each of us has only so much time on this earth. Yet, to me,
this is not logic any more, so much as closely-felt reality.

Since my youth, I have always made a habit of wondering, strolling
along a lane not frequently chanced upon, if it might not be the last
time I would ever do so; the more so in distant lands: just the
thought of never being in the same place again till death should part
me from this temporal sojourn, struck me dearly home.

What has me completely stuck is the fact that this section starts off with present perfect, which, midway in the sentence, shifts into past tense. What is going on here?

Am I correct in thinking that "being in the same place again" expresses the future?
