I've got a case related to the use of hyphen when making a particular compound adjective.
I'm surprised to find that in most cases "late medieval" is preferred over "late-medieval".
Google Ngram
I've always thought that such adjectives should be hyphenated, similarly to "a sixteenth-century manuscript" and "a green-eyed monster". Is this a kind of exception? Is "late-medieval" correct as well?
