Is there a word or expression for helping someone but the end result is not helpful at all?

0

I tried to use Google Translate on this. It didn't get me the result I wanted.

Google Translate automatically gave me "Helping me" as an answer, implying that the machine translator did not recognize the source language as an expression. Google Translate also suggested "do a disservice," and I looked at some usages. They were not what I had in mind, though.

Let me explain a situation:

Suppose you see someone doing something. You want to help the person
get the job done, so you suggest to help. That person allows you to
help, and so you help. But the problem is, you end up making the task
more difficult for the person, because now the person has to not only do the task, but also fix your mistake.

Google Translate suggests "do a disservice". You are doing a disservice to the other person, because you have made the task more difficult for that other person. Something doesn't sound right here.

Put it another way, how would you describe the situation?
