Background

It was originally intended that all tracks would be first studio recordings.[citation needed] However, Johnston's ongoing problems with mental illness prevented him completing an album's worth of sessions.[citation needed] As a result, the album is compiled from studio recordings, home recordings and live performances. Johnston alludes to this in the film The Angel and Daniel Johnston – Live at the Union Chapel when he mentions that the album had originally intended to be called 1989, but they had not been able to release it that year.
