“But” in the middle of a sentence?

0

"There is but a small amount"
"We are but falling leaves"
"There is but no one in Japan who doesn't speak Japanese"

What is the "but" doing there and what do these sentences exactly mean? I can't seem to find an explanation for this usage of "but" anywhere on the internet.

  • That third one is not idiomatic. "But", in this sense, means "only".
